Meet the charities Charity updates Create July 2016 we’ve been shortlisted for – not one – but two Charity of the Year Awards! July has been a month of celebrations here at Create and the good news keeps on coming! Early this month we commemorated Create’s landmark 13th birthday, and discovered that we’ve been shortlisted for – not one – but two Charity of the Year Awards! The Charity Times and Third Sector awards are highly prestigious accolades in the charity world, so Create HQ has been buzzing with excitement all month! See the Charity Times shortlist here and the Third Sector shortlist here. As July marks the beginning of school summer holidays, we’ve launched our summer young carers programme – and it opened with a bang! Professional jewellery designer Hayley Kruger – whose work has been exhibited at the V&A and featured in fashion magazines Vogue and Tatler – inspired young carers in Southwark to design their own jewellery, experimenting with wire, leather and decorative stones. Together, they explored new ideas and devised original themes and designs for earrings, necklaces and bracelets. The young carers were able to showcase their creative achievements to the public when London Live News came to film the workshops and televised them across the capital. One of the young carers loved the project so much that she told the reporter and our CEO “If I had to rate the project out of 101, I’d give it 1,007!” Over the next few weeks, the young carers will try out photography, mural painting and drama, before sharing their work at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre at 1pm on 26 August. If you can, come and join us! Over in Bath, we worked with young carers to explore the world of animation. They came together to communicate their ideas and get to grips with a range of exciting animation texhniques. Drawing charcoal images, they photgraphed their work, then rubbed out and redrew sections of the image before taking another photo. Adding the photos together resulted in artistic and expressive stop motion animations. They then used computer software to animate abstract shapes and patterns, combining their work into multi-form films. We held a post-race picnic to celebrate their success and reward their incredible dedication. You can find out how David did on our blog, and support his remarkable achievement on his fundraising page.
