What we've been up to this month:

September has been a busy month for Kidscape in the back-to-school period. On top of our work in delivering training to schools and our ZAP workshops, we also unveiled a surprise: our new logo, strapline and colour scheme. The brand refresh was developed in collaboration with Kidscape’s people: children and young people, parents and carers, teachers and the wider anti-bullying sector.

We hope it better shows what we do: we help you find your way. We’re still the same Kidscape, providing direct support, help and training about bullying, and we hope our new look will encourage more people to come to us when they need us.

In August, Kidscape piloted our new RISE workshops across Primark stores in England. RISE workshops have been designed to help children prepare for the move up to secondary school by raising confidence and exploring how to face challenges they might encounter.

The three hour workshops took place in Birmingham, Bristol, London and Manchester. On the day, children participated in fun activities and group discussions to develop their skills and understanding of managing change, making friends, standing strong against bullying behaviour and managing risk.  In a warm supportive environment, the soon-to-be Year 7s grew in confidence.

A total of 28 children attended the workshops with the following outcomes:

  • 95% strongly agreed or agreed that they now felt more confident about moving up to secondary school
  • 100% strongly agreed or agreed that they now feel more confident about making new friends
  • 95% strongly agreed or agreed that they now feel more confident in handling a bullying situation
  • 100% strongly agreed or agreed that they now felt more confident to ask for help.

In a few weeks’ time, the children that attended RISE will receive a small boost and a reminder of what they’ve learned. On the day of their workshop, each child filled out a postcard with a positive message to themselves, which will be sent back to them to remind them of the confidence and power within.

We’re very grateful to the children who attended and their parents and carers, to Primark for donating venues and to the team and volunteers who facilitated the workshops. We hope to use the learning from the pilot to expand the RISE workshops to many more children and young people in the summer of 2019.
