The Wave Project

Welcome to our Classroom

Tynemouth Project, North Yorkshire

We have started recruiting volunteers for our new pilot project in Tynemouth, North Yorkshire. The response so far has been amazing, to the point where we have had to pause applications for surf mentors as we are over capacity. We have also had lots of interest from referral organisations who are keen to refer individuals to the project. The pilot will begin in the springtime.

Social Prescribing Update

Our social prescribing pilot started in Cornwall in August 2019 and ends in August 2022. The project is led by Social Prescribing Coordinator, Sam Henderson-Palmer. Sam has shared that already 30 GP surgeries have signed up, which accounts for 50% of Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Practices. 50 young people have also been referred already. Sam shares that this is a key highlight so far:

“It’s amazing that we’ve reached half of the 100 fully funded places of 2020 within the first few months of the year and having signed over half of the GP surgeries in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to an agreement with the Wave Project committing them to funding the service beyond the grant period.

“This covers a population of 307,000 people (over 50% of Cornwall’s total population) and allows us to reach 64,000 children and young people of which potentially 6400 are predicted to be experiencing mental health problems in Cornwall alone.”

Volunteer Training

All of our coordinators are now busy preparing for delivery season which starts at the end of March when the sea begins to slowly but surely warm up! One of the key priorities at this time of year is organising volunteer training. We have had hundreds of volunteers sign up across our 13 locations since the beginning of 2020. We have 2,239 volunteers altogether and our organisation couldn’t run without them. This photo was from our Brighton/London volunteer training last week.

“Welcome to Our Classroom”

Beach School is an effective curriculum-linked outdoor educational programme that helps pupils to reignite their passion for learning. Referrals for our education programmes are now open for children in Upper Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 across Cornwall. Since the beginning of this year, 50 people have registered interest – headteachers, parents, SENCo’s etc.

It offers something nothing in school can; a fun, safe and different way to improve wellbeing, self-esteem and confidence, as well as a chance to learn to surf” – Secondary School Teacher
